Niger Delta Avengers Police warns militants against declaration of republic
The force PRO also advised the militants to explore legal means of channelling their grievances.
The threat by the Niger Delta Avengers to declare the oil rich region of Niger Delta as a republic on October 1, 2016, has sparked reactions.
The Nigerian police has issued a stern warning to the militant group not to go ahead with their threat, adding that it is a treasonable offence.
The spokesman of the police force, Donald Awunah, also said security forces will not allow any group to break the laws of the land.
Awnah said “I believe they (militants) know that it is a treasonable felony to declare a republic. The police and other security agencies will not allow any treasonable action to be perpetrated in any part of the country. They have been warned.”
The force PRO also advised the militants to explore legal means of channelling their grievances.
The Reformed Niger Delta Avengers (RNDA), has alsodescribed the announcement by Niger Delta Avengers to declare the region as a republic on October 1, 2016, as an empty threat.
RNDA alleged that it is a plan by former President Goodluck Jonathan, Alhaji Asari Dokubo and the Governor Nyesom Wike/Ahmed Markarfi-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to cause confusion in the country.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has however denied having any links with the Niger Delta Avengers.
